Flying High

The Tweet Coleman Aviation Scholarship was created to give women in the state of Hawaii an opportunity to obtain a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Pilot Certificate. The recipient of this scholarship will be able to purchase aviation study manuals, ground school training and flight training. Advancing the work of others is a cause close to home for Tweet, who in 1991, founded a scholarship for women in aviation. Hailed by Tweet as her greatest accomplishment, she established this fund, now in its twenty-seventh year. As a way she further supports women from the state of Hawaii in pursuing and achieving their dream of becoming a pilot, a dream both she and one of her daughters have had the pleasure of realizing. Her daughter, Jenny Coleman Michiels is a pilot
for FedEx Airlines.

First Unmanned Crew, History was made...

January 15, 1986, all female crew: pilots & flight attendants flew from Agana, Guam to
Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, to Narita, Japan and returned to Guam. (Pilots: Lennie,
Dorothy & Tweet)

Tweet's Career in Aviation

Regarded as a flight safety expert, she served as the FAA Academy’s International Flight Standards Program Manager for six years, overseeing the design and delivery of training programs offered to the 190 countries in the International Civil Aviation Organization. This undertaking not only required her to manage an elite team of international trainers, but also mandated her onsite, in-country presence when conducting assessments and training for government and civil aviation professionals throughout mainly Africa and Asia.

Prior to retiring from the FAA after an impressive 22-year career, Tweet spent her last 2 years as the Aviation Attaché in London, England. Leveraging the relationships and communication channels she established in her prior position, Tweet promoted global aviation safety, increased capacity, and environmentally sound aviation sector growth.
Tweet Coleman is a trailblazing woman in aviation, becoming one of the world's first commercial airline pilots and was part of the first all-female flight crew to fly a Boeing 727.

Tweet endowed AAUW Honolulu with a scholarship to help other women who aspire to be airline pilots. The Tweet Coleman Aviation Scholarship is for women who are seeking to earn an FAA Pilot Certificate.

Deadline is April 31st of each year.
